Steve May
Born in Hastings and now a seasoned Londoner Steve has been a life-long doodler, studying fine art and film making in Nottingham and Animation at the Royal College of Art.
Steve’s work is instantly recognisable: scratchy, spontaneous and fizzing with humour. He thrives on drawing characters that feel alive, full of movement, mischief and personality. This expressive style, paired with his animation background and energised by his anarchic humour has propelled him into exciting collaborations, from the Summer Reading Challenge to leading creative on Discover’s Superheroes exhibition. His kinetic linework and irreverent wit made him a perfect match for beloved titles like Dennis the Menace, The Terrible Viking books by Francesca Simon, Harry Hill's Matt Mills series, and the Pet Defenders series with Gareth Jones.
In 2024 Steve expanded into graphic novels, illustrating James Turner’s Poo Crew Adventures: Journey to Poo-topia (Farshore) – an inventive, fast-paced romp through the digestive system, blending comedy with science and introducing a whole new audience to his vibrant visual storytelling.
At the heart of Steve’s practice is a joy in drawing itself: the scratch of pen on paper, the unexpected character that emerges from a scribble, the comedy found in a wonky eyebrow or an exaggerated gesture. Whether illustrating slapstick fiction, designing interactive experiences, or pushing into new formats like graphic novels, Steve continues to explore ways to make pictures that spark laughter, surprise and connection.
