John Howe was born in 1957 in Vancouver and grew up in British Columbia. He studied at the Ecoles des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg and now works as a freelance illustrator in Switzerland, where he lives with his wife (also an illustrator) and son.

John is a renowned fantasy artist and worked alongside Alan Lee as a concept artist on Peter Jackson’s film trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. John has illustrated many J. R. R. Tolkien titles, calendars and board games.

His beautiful watercolour illustrations have also featured on the covers of many fantasy novels including Robin Hobb’s, Farseer, Liveship Traders and Tawny Man trilogies.

With the support of Kingfisher John Howe has recently published his first non-fiction title Lost Worlds. This classic and unique volume draws together Howe’s stunning artwork and wealth of historical knowledge and research to create this captivating exploration of abandoned, buried, forgotten and imagined worlds.
