Illustration Process: Skanska Brochure by Frances Castle

The international construction company Skanska, commissioned Frances Castle to illustrate a brochure about their newly refurbished 1980′s office building, demonstrating the latest green and sustainable technologies.

They wanted Frances to represent the outside of the building and then a cut-away illustration of the interior building, showing the green and sustainable technologies throughout. They also required symbols to accompany the text in the brochure, illustrating energy, renewable energy, water, carbon, innovation etc.

The brief was very specific and complex, Skanska gave 24 different technologies and energy saving measures they wanted Frances to illustrate – not an easy task as there were no architects plans of the construction available as reference. She was given a tour of the site in Woking, Surrey and took lots of photographs of the numerous systems including the solar photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting for flushing the toilets and recycling. Then it was up to her to interpret these for the cut-away illustration.

Here is the process from rough stage through to final artwork.
