Steve May was born in 1968 in sunny Hastings and spent his childhood drawing lots of things and discovering interesting ways of injuring himself.
After studying Fine Art painting and film-making in Nottingham and touring with an unsuccessful pop band, Steve completed an MA in Animation at the Royal College of Art and currently works as a successful London based freelance illustrator and animation director.
Steve has worked widely in editorial, children's publishing and advertising. He illustrates the weekly column of overheard Conversations, All Ears, for The Guardian Guide and has recently illustrated the cover and insides for the super Boy Zero, Wannabe Hero series (Faber & Faber) as well as the hilarious covers for the re-launch of the popular Jiggy McCue series (Orchard Books).
Steve has directed several short films including the award-winning Gut and X&Y, which was nominated for the 2008 British Animation Awards. His new film 'Rabbits' won a Gold Award in the New Media category of Images 34. He has worked widely in TV and commercials, including designing and directing Spacehopper Man for the acclaimed cult BBC series, Monkeydust.
