Steve May was born in 1968 in sunny Hastings and spent his childhood drawing lots of things and discovering interesting ways of injuring himself.
After studying Fine Art painting and film-making in Nottingham and touring with an unsuccessful pop band, Steve completed an MA in Animation at the Royal College of Art and currently works as a successful London based freelance illustrator and animation director.
Working widely in editorial, children's publishing and advertising. He illustrates Jeremy Strong's Cartoon Kid series (Puffin) as well as the hilarious covers for the re-launch of the popular Jiggy McCue series (Orchard Books).
Steve created the characters and animated trailer for the Reading Agency's 2012 Summer Reading Challenge which featured in libraries worldwide, reaching almost 1 million children. He led the design team for Discover's successful interactive Superheroes exhibition which included character design, a comic book and animated films.
He has directed several short films including the award-winning Gut and X&Y, which was nominated for the 2008 British Animation Awards. A regularly contributor to Images, Steve's animations 'Rabbits' and 'Anger' have won Gold Awards in the New Media category of Images 34 and 36. He has worked widely in TV and commercials, including designing and directing Spacehopper Man for the acclaimed cult BBC series, Monkeydust.
